Fletcher Class

View by Design Number
The Fletcher class was the most numerous and the most successful class of destroyers built by the U.S. Navy during World War II. Two slightly different bridge designs were used: the round-bridge with a walk-through pilot house, and the square-bridge with a walk-around pilot house.

Ships in red are not confirmed by photographic or textual research.

Notation

Indicates the date that the Bureau of Ships sent to the ship or shipyard drawings and instructions to paint that camouflage design. That directive was usually followed and camouflage completion photos were returned to the Bureau. For the rows that are marked red, no verification memos or photos have yet been found.
Indicates the earliest date that memos or photos confirm painting in that design.
Not applicable.
No assignment yet found.
Indicates the date that design drawing was sent, but probably not used.

Footnotes

Reassigned to this new Design by the BuShips 6/10/44 memo to ComServPac that listed ships that had been reassigned from the 10/11/43 letter #0937.
Camouflage Measure and Design was assigned in 10/11/43 ComServPac letter #0937 to the BuShips which assigned camouflage Designs to most ships in the Pacific Fleet.
DD-450 was assigned 31/24D in 10/11/43 ComServPac letter, but was sent Design 31/23D on 7/24/44.
DD-509 was sent 32/18D on 7/6/44, but by 10/9/44 was painted in 32/2C.
DD-513 was sent 32/14D, but photos reveal 31/14D with black and haze gray.
DD-521 was photographed in 32/6D in early 1944 while assigned to Alaska Command, later was photographed in 32/13D at Mare Island on 10/5/44, even though assigned 32/18D in 10/11/43 ComServPac letter #0937 to the Bureau of Ships.
DD-536 was assigned 31/9D in 10/11/43 letter #0937, but was sent drawings for 31/11D on 8/1/44 instead.
DD-573 was assigned 32/3D in 10/11/43 letter, was sent 32/3D on 12/15/43 and painted in 32/3D even though later was reassigned to 32/2C by the 6/10/44 memo.
DD-597 was partially painted in 32/11D before commissionimg, but was commissiomed on 2/22/45 wearing Measure 22.
DD-642 was assigned 31/7D in 10/11/43 letter, but painted 31/11D instead.
DD-644 was assigned 31/9D in 10/11/43 letter, but painted 32/10D instead.
DD-650 was assigned 31/23D in 10/11/43 letter but was sent drawings for 31/22D on 1/22/44 instead.
DD-653 was assigned 32/13D in 10/11/43 letter but was sent drawings for 32/24D on 12/30/43 instead.
Camouflage 31/10D was assigned in 10/11/43 ComServPac letter #0937 to the BuShips, however, DD-660 was sent 32/10D on 1/20/44. This is assessed to be a mistake and not a typo since DD-660 painted in Measure 32.
DD-673 was assigned 32/13D in 10/11/43 letter, but was sent 32/23D instead.
DD-682 was sent drawing 31/11D on 4/8/44, but had previously painted in 31/7D and remained in 7D.
DD-685 was assigned 32/13D in 10/11/43 letter, but was sent 31/13D instead and may have painted 13D using haze gray and black.
There exists a photograph on NavSource of a Fletcher class DD with a suspect hull number that appears to be 796 wearing 31/6D that was taken probably in early 1945, but the ship in this photo matches another photo of DD-798.
DD-804 was sent drawing 32/16D on 6/9/44, but painted in 31/11D.
